Phodong Monastery

Phodong Monastery is around 28 kilometers from Gangtok. It is a monastery built in the 18th century. There are as many as 260 monks in the monastery. Additionally, there is a great collection of ancient murals. It is amongst the six most important monasteries in Sikkim. It is set at a height of approximately 4500 ft.

Primarily; the original structure was destroyed in the earthquake. It was rebuilt in 1977 with the help of government funds. There is a wonderful festival which takes place in the monastery. There is a special dance performed which is the Chaam Dance. Along with this there are spiritual rituals which take place.
